Glances of Brazil Exhibition

What do multiple Glances of Brazil tell us about human rights in our country? The Institute for Development and Human Rights (IDDH) annually organizes the Glances of Brazil Exhibition, aiming to highlight the work of Brazilian artists who address themes related to health; sexual orientation and gender identity; race, discrimination, and violence against women; indigenous peoples; the environment; human rights defenders; and more in their works.

The IDDH believes in the power of art as a component of Human Rights Education and Culture, essential for the exercise of citizenship and for full human development. By resonating with people, art creates a movement. Through it, we challenge, we are moved, we travel to places we’ve never been, and we open our eyes to realities we are so reluctant to see.
With this project, we aim to promote Brazilian artists who also work to raise awareness about the human rights situation in the country and seek to embrace the plurality of perspectives on such sensitive issues.

That’s why we share here, in the virtual exhibition, diverse and multiple Glances of Brazil. The exhibition is an invitation for you to reflect with us, to reaffirm our struggle for the continuous defense of human rights.

For the 2023 Exhibition, over 70 works were submitted by artists aged 19 to 75, coming from all regions of Brazil. The goal was for artists to connect their works to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Seventeen works were selected, one for each SDG, to illustrate the VII Spotlight Report, prepared by the Civil Society Working Group for the 2030 Agenda—a group that monitors and evaluates the implementation of the SDGs in Brazil.

The VII Spotlight Report will be launched in the second half of 2023, nationally and at a UN event, when it will be available for download on the official websites of the IDDH and the GT SC for the 2030 Agenda.

About the works

The Glances of Brazil fulfills the goal of promoting Brazilian artists who also work to raise awareness about the human rights situation in the country and seeks to embrace the plurality of perspectives on such sensitive issues.

In this edition, over 70 works were submitted by artists from all regions of Brazil. Each artist could submit their work for one or more Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), relating their work to the themes and targets of the SDGs.

The 17 works selected for the VII Spotlight Report of the GT SC Agenda 2030 combine various techniques: drawing, different photography formats, collage, watercolor, among others. The Glances of Brazil exhibition is an invitation for you to reflect with us, to reaffirm our struggle for the continuous defense of human rights.
